LIMITED EDITION ALBUM DESIGN

For this limited edition of marimba musician Mika Stoltzman’s jazz album, released in celebration of her 60th birthday, we centered the design around red, the traditional color of Kanreki in Japan. Mika also shared her admiration for Joan Miró, which shaped the minimal yet structured composition and the playful approach to line and color.

The linear elements subtly reference the bars of a marimba, imagining each note extending outward as a line of color. Mika requested a custom contemporary font, which I designed to complement the album’s light, expressive character.

The cover features a single-line–inspired illustration capturing the flow state musicians enter while performing bringing forward the improvisational energy at the heart of jazz.
